Research Interests

Air transportation, simulation and modeling, traffic assignment, mathematical models


Tao has considerable experience in mathematical modeling and estimation. During his time with ATSL, Tao has developed a mathematical approach for estimating air transportation demand and has done research into the impacts of oil prices on general aviation demand. Tao has also actively participated in producing five-year operational expectations for the U.S. National Airspace System and has worked extensively in developing a benefits model for North Atlantic Alternative aircraft tracks. Prior to joining the ATSL, Tao participated in research on airline delay costs, traffic assignment and demand analysis and fuel consumption. Tao has also had various teaching roles, from serving as a teaching assistant to being the primary lecturer.

Tao is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and is proficient in English. He is skilled in Microsoft Visual Basic and proficient with MATLAB, TransCAD, Vissim, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, MAPLE, SAS, R and ADAM. He is a recipient of the Ed Beale Fellowship and was awarded honorable mention for best student paper at the 4th Integrated Communications Navigation and Surveillance (ICNS) Conference in 2013.
